Aligned with the Next Generation Learning Standards, our academic programs serve as essential tools that support teachers in helping students meet—and surpass—grade-level benchmarks for academic success. At P.S. 273, we use the following curricula:
HMH Into Reading
A comprehensive K–5 reading program that builds strong foundational literacy skills through engaging texts, vocabulary development, and reading comprehension strategies. It emphasizes balanced, research-aligned instruction across all elementary grade levels.
HMH Into Writing
A structured writing curriculum that guides students through the writing process—from idea generation and planning to revision and publishing—across genres. It provides scaffolded supports that help students develop clarity, coherence, and confidence as writers.
Heggerty
A systematic phonemic awareness program delivered daily through short, focused lessons. Heggerty strengthens essential auditory skills like rhyming, segmenting, and blending, laying a solid foundation for early reading success.
Fundations
A multisensory phonics program that teaches decoding, spelling, and handwriting through consistent routines and explicit instruction. It supports word recognition and literacy fluency, especially in early grades.
Envision Math
A next-generation, standards-aligned mathematics curriculum that engages students through visual learning, problem-based instruction, and conceptual understanding. It develops deep mathematical thinking with flexibility for print, digital, or blended use.
iReady Math (Grades 3-5)
A comprehensive core mathematics curriculum designed to meet the rigor of state standards while supporting all learners. It combines teacher-led instruction with interactive digital lessons that build conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and problem-solving skills. The program also includes ongoing assessments that help teachers tailor instruction to student needs and monitor progress throughout the year.
AMPLIFY Science
A phenomenon-based science curriculum that nurtures curiosity and critical thinking through hands-on investigations, multimedia tools, and real-world phenomena. It integrates science practices and disciplinary core ideas to develop young learners as active problem-solvers.
Passport to Social Studies
A thematic social studies program that guides students on a global journey through history, cultures, geography, and civic understanding. It invites students to explore diverse societies while building global awareness and empathy.
In addition to core academic subjects of reading, writing, math, science, and social studies, all of our students participate in a variety of special subject classes that enrich their learning experience.
Music (Music and the Brain Program)
Beginning in Kindergarten, all students learn to play the keyboard through the “Music and the Brain” approach, which emphasizes how musical training enhances cognitive development and emotional well-being. This method integrates neuroscience with music education for a rich, brain-based learning experience.
Visual Arts (NYC DOE Blueprint for the Arts)
Our Visual Arts program follows the NYC DOE’s Blueprint for the Arts, ensuring a curriculum that is sequential, developmentally appropriate, and culturally responsive. It immerses students in art-making, art history, and creative expression aligned with citywide arts education goals.
Tech/Keyboarding (DOE Technology Standards)
Our technology and keyboarding instruction is guided by the New York State Technology Education Learning Standards, which emphasize analysis, inquiry, design, information systems, and interdisciplinary problem-solving. Students learn to access, process, and apply technology effectively across learning domains. New York State Education Department
Physical Education (NYC DOE and NYS Standards)
We follow the NYC K–5 Physical Education Scope and Sequence, focusing on physical literacy, locomotor skills, rhythms, gymnastics, safety, and community building. This curriculum aligns with New York State anchor standards—including motor competency, physical fitness, movement principles, social behavior, and lifelong wellness. weteachnyc.org New York State Education Department
